In the institution, I learned to work. At first, I cleaned and bathed other residents who soiled themselves. As a teenager, I was assigned jobs on the institution's farm, shovelling hay and caring for farm animals. It's hard work, but great to get out of the Cottage where I lived. When I was released in 1971, I was sent to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where I got a job as a busboy in a large downtown hotel and eventually the same job at a major hospital.
In 1980, with the help of Governor Milliken, I got a job in the mailroom of the Department of Mental Health, where I stayed until retiring in January of 2010. The job allowed me to achieve my childhood dream of owning my own home. I've been a homeowner since 1998. I am very proud of my lovely home. I enjoy sitting on my patio in good weather or watching TV in my living room filled with souvenirs and knick-knacks, and antique collections
