While in the institution, I had a feeling of being protected on a larger scale than I understood at the time. Only years later, after coming out and holding a job, did I realize my want and need for spiritual guidance.
My faith journey started when a co-worker introduced me to the fellowship of the University United Methodist Church in East Lansing, Michigan. There, I received my first formal education about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Over time, I broke away from the church's formal teaching and sought my spiritual quest. I began to look at many television preachers and had friends help me put my beliefs on paper. It did not take long for my spiritual understanding to grow, and I longed to see the sights described in the Bible.
